Attempting to honor his father's wishes, Rafal sent assassins to eliminate Nel at Lythos Castle, having already claimed two of the bracelets for himself. By doing so, Sombron sought to stir up conflict between the siblings and compel Rafal to take his place as his heir following his death to their world's Alear.Ĭontinuing to masquerade as Nil and progressively losing sight of the reasons for his pursuit of power, Rafal accompanied his sister, Alear and the Four Winds in claiming the Emblem Bracelets to save their world. Rafal obeyed the request and supposedly joined Nel in opposing Sombron, though prior to his death, Sombron used his magic to taint Nel's dragonstone to foster feelings of resentment and envy in Rafal over his sister's greater strength and ability to transform. When he wanted to reveal his new power, Sombron forbade him from doing so, instead having him act as if he was weak to hide his true power. While training, Rafal was soon able to awaken and harness the power of the bracelets, which impressed Sombron. Sombron was also aware of the deception, but tolerated it since he considered the real Nil to be a failure. Nel was aware of Rafal's true identity, but chose not to expose him as she had begun to see him as her second brother. Rafal did as he asked and made it as if he was the one to die that day and lived as Nil for the next thousand years, steadfastly honoring Nil's dying wish to look after Nel for him. Rafal found the dying Nil, who asked him to take his identity as he did not want to see his sister heartbroken.

Soon after Nel shared her dragonstone with Nil, he was mortally wounded in another battle. In reality, he was actually Rafal, who befriended the actual Nil during his youth, having borne the same likeness as him while he had a twin sibling of his own, he knew only that they had died while they were too young for him to recall what they were like.
